Tips to Create Ideal TV News Story

If you can create the ideal TV news story, odds are you can create a highly successful presentation.  Either in person — like a keynote address — or on video.

  • Strive for wide appeal.
  • Make it relevant.  Think what the viewer is asking:  “What’s in it for me?”
  • Put a face on your story.  People identify with other people and their stories.
  • Get to the point.  Attention spans are short.
  • End with a call to action.  What do you want your audience or do or at least think?

What about dramatic video?  For sure.  Fires, for example, engage viewers.  But the challenge is engage viewers when you don’t have dramatic video.

 

Before fine tuning your presentation, test your storytelling with people you know.

You don’t have to be on stage.  Rather, just in a regular conversation.  Watch the eyes of the person you’re talking to.  Are they engaged on you or distracted?

Also, are they asking questions?  Usually, if the person asks questions, they’ve been listening and want more information.  If they have no questions, perhaps they’re not interested in the topic.  Or not interested because of how you presented.  Learn and revamp your presentation.

Get their feedback.  Discover what they found most interesting and why?  Lease interesting and why?

Criticism can sting, but it’s better to get it before you create your video or present in front of a large group.

And what about if you’re on deadline pressure as a multimedia journalist?

Best advice:  Focus on elements that tell the story best.  Remember you get 80% of the results from the 20% you focus on.
