Proven Keys to Great Storytelling

One of the keys to great storytelling is to find a person whose story excites you.  A story you want to share.

My three decades of experience storytelling for business, TV stations, and network television have taught me:  The key is to find the right person.  You need to think “This person is so memorable.  I got to share their story.”

Proven Keys to Great Storytelling:  Takeaways

  • Tell stories through people.
  • Tell stories about people.
  • Capture the person in their environment.
  • Get them to do something they usually do.
  • Encourage them to continue to do it when you’re talking with them.
  • Make it a conversation, not a typical “interview”
  • Use meaningful transitions to guide viewers from one part of your story to another.

You can learn a lot from Bob Dotson

Bob has been national correspondent on NBC News’ “Today Show.”  More than six million people watched Bob Dotson’s Emmy award-winning segment, American Story, on NBC’s Today Show. For four decades, Dotson traveled the country searching out inspiring individuals who quietly perform everyday miracles. He has received more than 100 awards for his work in broadcast journalism, including eight National Emmys.

As you watch the Bob’s American Story video with this article, look for my comments at the bottom of the screen.  Bob, himself, found this so instructive that he’s incorporating the analysis in his new book.

Here’s Bob’s approach:

I am asked all the time how I find the people I profile in my American Stories? I look for the 150 million people who can’t afford lobbyists in Washington. They are not perverse or extreme. They are the vast majority that nobody bothers to talk with. They’ve been ignored. They lead lives with extraordinary passion, lives that inspire the novels that get made into movies that actors star in, so that journalists can interview them about the people they portray. I prefer the people who don’t make headlines. They make a difference.

Bob has a great way of telling stories.  Even when he’s succinct as in the case with this image he Tweeted:

“Trading Big Sky for concrete today, riding into NYC for tomorrow’s Today Show.”
