How to Video an Over-the-Top Testimonial

When you look for a testimonial, you normally seek out:

  • A raving fan.
  • Reference to specific product benefits.
  • A solution to the viewer’s problem.

When I was shooting a testimonial for a weightloss clinic, they provided just the right person. She was all of the above.  Besides, we were able to show what the woman looked like before the weightloss program and after.

I’d like to take credit for my great questions.  But, in reality, it’s not so much the questions you ask.  Rather it comes down to finding the “right” person.

So how to video an over-the-top testimonial comes down to finding that over-the-top person — an individual who is passionate about the product or service you’re promoting.

Why do I refer to this as “over-the-top”?  Some viewers found the testimonial too dramatic.  Yet others loved the woman’s success story and wanted to know more about the medically-supervised weightloss program.  In any event, this is a great problem to have.  Sometimes people selected to give testimonials are hard-pressed to offer specifics — or lack the passion you see in this video.  That’s even if they lost 52 pounds in five months as this woman did.
