How to Persuade a National Audience without Losing Your Credibility can be quite basic.

It starts with mastering the fundamentals.  Kathleen Sebelius made a huge mistake in trying to connect with her audience in this video.  Her eyes were closed when she was responding to the question about whether the President lied when he said people could keep their health insurance and their doctor.  See for yourself in this very brief excerpt showing the first few seconds.   Don’t do this.

Sometimes we make the mistake of looking for what’s subtle but miss the obvious.  Even though Kathleen Sebelius is an experienced politician and public servant making hundreds of speeches, she apparently lost focus here.

In trying to explain the President was telling the truth when he said you can keep your doctor and your insurance plan, her failure to make eye contact at the start makes people wonder:  “Was she reluctant to look at her audience because she, herself, was stretching the truth?”

Okay, in fairness to Kathleen Sebelius:  She’s been through a Hell of a time in the glare of a national spotlight.  She’s defending herself by saying she really doesn’t know much about running a website.  And even President Obama said running a huge healthcare program like this isn’t something that a government agency can do well.  Bob Kaplitz says several of his so-called “concierge doctor” clients are well positioned to take advantage of the opportunity to provide quality healthcare.  But that’s another story.  This one is about the need to keep your eyes on your audience to gain trust.  And, of course, TELL THE TRUTH.  if you lose your credibility, your reputation is badly damaged.  It’s simple:  Do you trust a person who lied to you or even misrepresented the facts?  But…

The point here isn’t about the politics or even truthfulness.  How to Persuade a National Audience without Losing Your Credibility comes down to communicating the truth and connecting with your audience through eye contact.
